Locations for photography portraits can be flexible, outdoors or indoors. I have a portable studio set up and prefer to shoot at your home, business, a location you are comfortable with, or a photography studio. Styling for portrature captures the essence of the person, their life, their achievements and their surroundings. Here are a few common style set ups to consider:

High-Key Photography Lighting:

This set up, and its counterpart, Low-Key Lighting are both minimalist. It's a two-light set-up with a plain white background lit by a dedicated light. The subjects are set 1 to 2 metres from the background and lit by the key light. High-Key is very popular with families but suits any subject. The style cues focus on happiness, enjoyment and fun with the person or family group distanced from the background.

Low-Key Photography Lighting:

The counterpart of High-Key, its usually also a two-light set-up with a plain black background (or shades of grey) lit by a dedicated light, or, if pure black, not lit at all. A second or third light can be placed behind the subject to create highlights that separate them from the background. The style cues offer a more cherished, serene and intimate perspective on the subject. Typical scenes would emphasise the bonds of life, self-confidence and endurance of the subject such as male or female nudes, parents with new-borns (nude or semi-nude), grandparents or older people, celebrities or personalities.

Outdoor Photography Location Shoots:

The possibilities for outdoor photography location shoots are endless. The style cues are driven by the location, subjects and lighting. The location chosen should emphasise the connection of the person with the place, or if not the actual spot, the connection with the environment depicted in the background. Usually, placing the subject in the environment establishes the connection but sometimes it must be more visual for the casual viewer, so a river fisherman might be dressed for the river holding a rod & line, or a retired racing driver in normal clothes but holding a battered helmet, for example.

Indoor Photography Location Shoots:

The most common indoor photography location is your home. Your home provides safety, security and a place to relax but many homes are not ideal for lengthy portrait shoots simply because of size, location and room layout. The balance therefore has to be struck between comfort of the subjects and the needs of the shoot. I would usually move furniture around to create a 'shooting space' that would provide the elements of home to set the subjects against. Low-Key lighting is usually best in these circumstances. A place of business is another option, usually there is more space and less furniture to move around and this options suits the professional portrait.

Studio Photography Location Shoots:

A studio shoot is a fun experience, not least to give you a taste of celebrity culture. Edinburgh has many alternatives depending on the style cues wanted. At minimum a studio will have a relaxing area with coffee, TV/DVD and Wi-Fi for those waiting their turn, or just watching. Also, a make-up and changing facility, toilets and maybe a kitchen. The studio itself will have its own lighting, backgrounds and a selection of props and will be big enough to shoot a whole family. Studios are hired by the hour and the prices above DO NOT include studio time.
